A book and many class disccusions on heritage, authenticity, interpretation and destination management are even in EMTM not the same as the experience of visiting a destination through the eyes of a tourist and destination manager. In the light of the courses on Cultural Heritage, lectured by Timothy Dallen, and Destination Management, by Louis Mundet, the students of generation 2014-16 were divided into three groups, visiting the Catalonia region. Barbora, the Danish country representative, wrote a story on her experience on the field trip. I must admit – I am an introvert, I get lost in big groups, I have a lifestyle very uncommon for students, I am scared of many things, and I prefer to plan and control what, how, and when I do something. So, when they told me that I will have to drive around in Alt Empordá with 16 other people for 5 days, I wasn’t looking forward to it, no. But, ask me now, and I can only tell you one thing – I enjoyed it. Well, sure there were some challenges, and yes it was good to be home again, but I enjoyed sharing knowledge and experiences with my friends, the discussions and adventures we had. It was fun to see how people received us, as we were the attraction. We learned a lot about the real life of tourism and heritage, and could put it into perspective with the idealized one of the books. We visited places of Costa Brava that I, personally, probably wouldn’t have visited otherwise – discovering another charming corner of this world. Even though we were late every single time (yes my time understanding is still northern European, and the delays therefore drive me crazy), our guides always waited patiently for us and willingly answered all of our more or less weird questions. We enjoyed great food together, snacked a lot, fought fights with the waitress trying to cheat us, had a high usage of traffic sickness pills, froze to the bones in the Sant Pere monastery, and finally had a good system for loading the van. Personally, I’m also happy for the Spanish/Catalan practice I could get during the trip. There is no doubt that I will recommend Figueres, Roses, Castello d’Empuries, Cadaqués, Llanca and the others to everybody I can, and I will gladly revisit them myself.
