Slovenians are really a sport and fit. You can see people biking on the street, running, and hiking, except for Sunday. On this day the city has to make way for nature. Slovenians than retreat to the countryside for hiking and cross-country skiing, followed by the traditional mountain food in one of the cottages. Inspired by Slovenians, some of us were taking active breaks after classes in the Tivoli Park. This huge park is literally two steps from city center. However, the most popular sport for EMTMers was the amazing local bike sharing system.
Most of us fell in love with several social oriented projects going on in Ljubljana. The absolute favorite was Skuhna, a restaurant employing immigrants as a way of introducing Slovenians to other cultures, food and open discussions on integration. Also, some of us bought a backpack from only recycled materials purchased from ”all is made from recycling” heaven. The message obviously is: Slovenians never stop surprising EMTM. Another place party lovers definitely have to visit is Meltekova. We could compare it to a small Christiania, with different bars and places to hang out. Ljubljana also satisfied cinemas lovers. Despite the trend of modern cinema complexes, Ljubljana offers two "old fashioned" charismatic cinemas. Even though Slovenia is not part of the Balkan countries, we could not stop to notice the spirit of these neighborhood countries. Ljubljana , with its cozy atmosphere and cafes alongside the river, has definitely marked our hearts and has made it difficult for every generation to leave this small capital. |
Travel |
Slovenia is a paradise for inexpensive and adventorous traveling. The fact that trains and buses are not operating that frequently in Slovenia, gave a foundation of an amazing invention : PREVOZ. This is a local car sharing website that enables to travel in a quick and cheap way everywhere in Slovenia and neighborhood countries. Additionally, it is a nice and easy way to get in touch with locals and have some interesting talks.
Another inexpensive way of transport while travelling in the group is hiring a car. There are several companies, which can provide Student Discounts. Hitchhiking could also be a comfortable and quick way of traveling. Nothing is impossible in sLOVEenia. Slovenia has around 38 km of coasts. You can literally go for a hike in the mountains, and later on the day, cool down in the sea. Almost everything is at about two hours distance. The main costal cities, we have visited, are Piran and Koper. We definitely recommend to do the following awesome experience: hitchhike to the Skocnjanske caves, and relax in the grass with a glimpse on the canyon and wine racks of the nearby eco farm. Yes, this is the life in EMTM! Another place, which most of the EMTMers have visited is the Soca Valley. This is truly the paradise for adventure lovers, with a lot of possibilities for adrenaline sports such as rafting, canoeing and bungee jumping. We have to admit that some of the crazy EMTMers have tried to jump in the Soca mountain river in Spring, which is the best moment to freeze and feel afterwards some EMTM love! Slovenia is the door to the Balkans countries. Many of us have benefited from this central location and have gone for the Balkan experience during the spring break. It was a great possibility to get a feeling of the old Yugoslavia and the horrible Balkan wars, which are still visible in many of these countries. Additionally, these trips offered us a new prespective on the young and independants ex-Yugoslavia countries and their tourism development. Some of the absolute must goes are: Mostar and Sarajevo in Bonsia and Hercegovina , Boka Kotorska and national park Durmitor in Montenegro. |
